Today, I cam across a statistic from CNN (sourced from Centre for Disease Control) that showed between the years of 2004 and 2013 there were 313 American deaths that were linked to terrorism. In that same ten year span, there were 316,545 deaths attributed to death by firearms in the States (see below).
During that time, think how many trillions of dollars as well as other resources that have been allocated into quelling the violence from terrorists. Not that I'm saying that it was wrong to do so, but compare that to the fact that when it comes to gun violence in the States, the only thing that ever seems to come from it, is a shouting match.
I guess my question is: why is it that if your people are killed by people with an ideological agenda, it is something that must be stopped. Yet, if your people are killed due to the fact that US citizens are allowed to own guns, it is simply part of the American condition?
Other laws in the US constitution have been changed...that's why they are called amendments. Surely, if the lives of the American people are of value, it shouldn't matter who does the killing.

I was kind of hoping that the shooting in San Bernardino was nothing more than another in a rash of mass shootings that seem to have been proliferating in the US as of late. I was actually rooting for that explanation rather than it being linked with Daesh terrorism, and here is why.
Every time there is a terrorist attack, it seems that the media and more so social media, go absolutely ape-shit over Islamic extremism, and then take those thoughts to outrageous conclusions:
Every time there is a terrorist attack, it seems that the media and more so social media, go absolutely ape-shit over Islamic extremism, and then take those thoughts to outrageous conclusions:
- ban the burqa (they could hide bombs under there);
- stop accepting refugees (they could have Daesh affiliations);
- prohibit mosques (they're a breeding ground for extremism);
- spy on and monitor virtually every citizen in the world (we'll just save all this info...just in case)
which are horribly narrow minded and offensive!
The reason that I was hoping for simply another gun-nut, mass shooting is that other than politicians yelling at each other over the 2nd amendment, nothing bad happens! You could argue that nothing good happens, but nothing changes.
- No one says they were Christian terrorists and we should treat all Christians with suspicion
- No one says we should close all churches
- No one says nuns should remove their habits as they might have an assault rifle tucked away in there
When a mass shooting happens, it is simply put into the books as another terrible event, and over time, it simply fades away. But with this idea of a terrorist affiliation, I have a feeling the rhetoric is simply going to get out of control.
I hope that calmer heads prevail, and people will understand that the actions of a few people do not represent an entire religion, but history has a pretty bad track record on this.
